Installing your theme

Getting the file into Shopify takes about two minutes; making the storefront yours takes about ten. Nothing touches your live store until the last step.

Before you start

You need the .zip file you downloaded and a Shopify account with the Manage themes permission. That is the store owner by default; staff accounts may need it granted.

Do not unzip the file. Shopify wants the zip exactly as downloaded. Unzipping and re-zipping it usually breaks the upload, because macOS and Windows both add extra folders that Shopify rejects.

If your browser unzipped it automatically — Safari does this by default — download it again with Save link as, or turn off Open "safe" files after downloading in Safari's settings.

Upload it

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes.
  2. Scroll to Theme library and click Add theme → Upload zip file.
  3. Choose your .zip and click Upload file.

Shopify takes 10–60 seconds to process it. When it finishes, the theme appears in your library — not on your live store.

Preview before you publish

Click Actions → Preview on the newly uploaded theme.

You are now looking at your real products and collections rendered through the new theme, while your customers still see your old one. Click around: check a product page, add something to the cart, open the cart drawer.

Nothing you do in preview affects your live store.

What the first preview looks like

Read this before you look, because the first preview surprises people.

The theme ships with no photographs. Not as an oversight — a theme zip may not redistribute anyone else's pictures, so every image slot arrives empty and Shopify draws a grey placeholder in it. The hero and the story section will both look like grey boxes until you pick your own images in the editor. This is normal and it takes about ten minutes to fix.

Sections that need something from your store stay hidden until you point them at it. "New in" needs a collection; "Shop by category" needs four. Until you choose them, those sections render nothing at all on the storefront rather than an empty band — you will see them in the editor, with the setting waiting, and your customers will not see them at all. The same is true of the customer-quotes section: it appears once you add a quote.

The words are ours and are meant to be replaced. The demo copy is written for one kind of shop — clothing, or a single skincare product, depending on which theme you bought. Every line of it is editable text in the theme editor.

So a first preview is a real, working storefront with your products in it, wearing placeholder pictures and our copy. What it is not is a finished shop, and the ten minutes between those two is the editor.

Customise it

Click Customize to open the theme editor. Everything is editable here — colours, fonts, sections, the copy in every block. No code required.

Work through the homepage top to bottom: pick your images first, then your collections, then the copy. That order matters — the sections that are hidden for want of a collection reappear as soon as you choose one, and it is easier to write copy against a page you can see.

Publish

When you are happy, go back to Online Store → Themes, find your theme in the library and click Actions → Publish.

Your storefront switches over instantly. Your old theme stays in the library, so if anything looks wrong you can publish it again and be back where you started in seconds.

A note on apps

Apps that inject code into your storefront were installed against your old theme. Some re-inject themselves automatically; some need you to re-enable them under App embeds in the theme editor.

After publishing, check any app that shows something on the storefront — reviews, upsells, popups, subscriptions — and re-enable it if it has gone quiet.

If the upload fails

The three common causes, in order of how often they happen:

  • The file was unzipped and re-zipped. Download a fresh copy and upload that.
  • You are at the 20-theme limit. Shopify caps theme libraries at 20. Delete an old one.
  • Permissions. A staff account without Manage themes sees the button but the upload fails.
