Six apps a Shopify clothing store can replace with its theme

A clothing store on Shopify tends to collect one app per job: a size chart, colour swatches, quick view, a sticky add-to-cart bar, a free-shipping bar and a cart upsell. Each is a monthly line on the bill and one more thing loading on the product page. Hullara Apparel does the first five in its Core edition and the sixth in Pro, as part of the theme. Below is each job, what the theme does, and what an app still does better.

Start with your own bill

App prices change too often for a table on this page to stay true, so start from the number that is yours. In the Shopify admin, Settings › Billing shows what you are charged for apps: subscriptions and usage fees are on your regular Shopify bill, and some apps charge you outside Shopify, on invoices of their own.

Write down the apps that do one of the six jobs below, and add them up on what your apps cost, which starts from a placeholder until you type your own figures.

The six jobs

Size chart · Core

A Size chart block under the size picker opens in place, from one page you share across products or from content you bind to each product with a metafield, and shows nothing on a product with neither. An app still earns its fee if it recommends a size from a shopper's height and weight. Size chart without an app

Colour swatches · Core

Colours are drawn from Shopify's own colour-pattern metaobject, so the swatch shows the colour stored against the product, not a value typed again into the theme. Colour swatches

Quick view · Core

A dialog over the collection grid with the product's pictures, options and buy button, so a shopper adds a size without leaving the grid. It opens the product's real page, so it shows the product page you already set up. Quick view

Sticky add to cart · Core

A bar docks at the bottom of the screen once the real buy button is out of sight, and submits the theme's own product form, so it adds the size and colour the shopper chose. It is on for phones by default. An app still makes sense if you want the bar to carry its own picker, or to test two designs against each other. Sticky add to cart

Free-shipping bar · Core

The cart drawer and the cart page show how much more there is to spend, against an amount you type in your store's currency, in your own words. At zero, the default, it shows nothing, so a new install promises no shipping you did not offer. Free-shipping bar

Cart upsell · Pro

A short row of products you choose, in the cart, leaving out anything already in it, added without leaving the page. If you want the products picked for you from what sells together, that is what an upsell app is for. Cart upsell

What it doesn't do

A clothing store still needs an app for these:

  • Reviews. The theme shows a star rating only when a reviews app has stored one on the product; it does not collect reviews.
  • Size recommendations, as above: a chart is a table, not a calculation.
  • Anything you have not found in the theme. The features page lists what each edition does; if your app does something that is not on it, keep the app.

Swapping without a gap

Add the theme to your library, where it stays unpublished until you publish it, and set up the jobs your apps did. Compare the two on a phone. Then publish the theme and uninstall the apps it replaces: uninstalling stops an app's future billing cycles, though a charge it has already raised can still reach your next bill.
