Hullara vs Dawn: a Shopify Dawn alternative once you outgrow it

Hullara is a Shopify Dawn alternative for when your store outgrows Dawn. Dawn is a fine free start; what you gain is the merchandising sections Dawn has no equivalent for — quick view, bundles, quantity tiers, a shoppable lookbook — built into the theme instead of bought as apps, and updates merged into your customised theme for you, with your edits kept.

La respuesta corta

Dawn is Shopify's free default theme, installed and updated from the Shopify admin. Hullara is a paid theme sold direct, with merchandising sections Dawn has no equivalent for — quick view, bundles, quantity tiers, a shoppable lookbook — and updates we merge into your customised theme for you.

Hullara encaja mejor con
A store that has outgrown one product image and a buy button, and wants quick view, bundles, quantity tiers or a shoppable lookbook without installing an app for each one.
Dawn encaja mejor con
A new store with a small catalogue that wants a clean, free starting point and has not yet reached for a merchandising app.

En resumen. Dawn is a fine free place to start. You have outgrown it when you start installing apps to merchandise — each one a monthly fee and another script in your storefront. Hullara builds quick view, bundles, quantity breaks and a shoppable lookbook into the theme itself, with no app subscription per feature. And we do the updates for you: each release is merged into your customised theme — settings, templates and your own code edits kept — and arrives as an unpublished theme you publish when ready.

Start on Dawn, then outgrow it

Dawn is free, made by Shopify, and a fine theme to open a store on. This page is about the next step: the point where a growing store outgrows it, and what changes when that store moves to Hullara.

The point where a store outgrows Dawn

It is not only how the store looks. The point is merchandising — the things a product page does to sell more than one item at a time. Dawn ships the essentials: a featured collection, a featured product, rich text, a video, testimonials. What it does not ship is the layer above that:

  • Quick view from a collection card, so a shopper can add a size from the grid without a page load and without losing their place in the list.
  • Bundles, where two or three products are added in one press.
  • Quantity breaks — buy three, pay less — rendered on the product page with the tiers the merchant actually set.
  • A cart upsell on the cart page and in the drawer, and a comparison table or slider for stores whose customers are choosing between variants rather than browsing.
  • A product page showing 2, 3 and 5 item tiers against the saving each earns
Quantity breaks, on the product page
  • A comparison table with four rows setting this product against a cheaper one
    Comparison table
  • A before-and-after slider with a draggable handle between two photographs
    Comparison slider
  • A flat-lay photograph with two hotspot dots marking products in it
    Shoppable image
  • A shoppable lookbook — hotspots on a styled photograph, each opening the product it sits on.

Every one of those is something merchants add to Dawn with an app. That is the real comparison, and it is not theme against theme:

Dawn plus four apps against one theme.

Four apps is four monthly subscriptions, four scripts loading on your storefront, four vendors who each need to still exist next year, and four sets of settings that interact in ways nobody tested together. A theme that has those sections built in has one of each.

That is the argument for a theme with those sections built in: one theme to update, one set of settings, and no app subscription per feature.

Updates: done for you, with your work kept

Dawn updates in one click, in your admin. Shopify distributes it, so Shopify can push a new version to you, and your theme settings come across.

What does not come across is code. If you or a developer edited a Liquid file, that edit belongs to the old copy — and on a free theme you are updating from the admin, that is the one thing the button cannot carry.

Every theme sold outside the Theme Store normally has it worse. A new version arrives as a zip, installing it means uploading a whole new theme, and this time it is not only your code that is lost — the sections you arranged, the text you rewrote and the colours you tuned belong to the old theme too. When we read the one-to-three-star reviews of the three biggest direct-sold themes, it was the same complaint in all three, in their own words — quoted, dated and linked on the page about updates: customers reinstalling after every update, lifetime buyers finding that "lifetime" did not include a usable upgrade path, updates that "require coding experience or significant time".

Hullara fixes it, and we do the work. A Hullara update is not a reinstall. We take the store's current theme, and:

  • Your templates, theme settings and layout are never written. Not merged, not migrated — copied across wholesale. Whatever the theme editor says today is what it says afterwards.
  • Liquid files you edited stay yours. Every file is compared against the version you were shipped, so an edit is a fact rather than a guess. Files you changed keep your version and are listed by name, so you know exactly which ones did not take the new release.
  • Translations are merged, new strings underneath your own wording rather than over it.
  • The result is uploaded as a separate, unpublished theme. The store serving your customers is not touched. You look at the new one, and you publish it when you are ready — or never.

That last point is the design, not a detail. There is deliberately no way for us to push straight to your live theme, because a broken update on a live store is the failure this whole mechanism exists to make impossible.

There is nothing for you to run. The merge is done by our tooling, so there is no zip to upload and no file to compare by hand. What reaches your store is a new unpublished theme, plus the list of any files you changed that kept your version.

The evidence, since this is a claim about our own product. Run against a real store on 2026-08-06, upgrading it from 0.1.0 to 0.2.0 and then checked against Shopify's API rather than by eye: the store's settings_data.json and its home page template came out byte-for-byte identical to the old theme; the JavaScript matched the new build and not the old one; a comment somebody had left in footer.liquid was still there; the translation file carried both the store's own key and the one 0.2.0 added; and the live theme's last-modified date was over a week earlier — untouched, as promised.

Price, said plainly

Dawn costs nothing. Hullara Core starts at $129 once, or $19 a month; Pro starts at $229 once, or $30 a month.

The comparison that matters is not a theme price against $0. It is one licence against the monthly cost of the apps you would otherwise install to get the same product page, for as long as your store exists. Work out that number for your own store: for a store that needs several of those apps, it is not close.

Where the two agree

Neither theme fabricates anything. No per-visitor countdown that resets on reload, no stock number nobody set, no "12 people are viewing this". Shopify would not ship a default theme that did, and Hullara cannot — the code to invent those numbers was never written, which is a design decision explained at length on why this theme has no fake countdown. If you are comparing either of these against a theme that does fabricate, that is the comparison worth reading, and invented scarcity is now illegal in the UK and the EU.

Both take accessibility seriously. Hullara runs axe at WCAG 2.1 AA over four builds and five viewport widths; Shopify maintains Dawn to its own bar.

Both degrade without JavaScript. Hullara's collection filtering, sorting and pagination are a plain form that works with scripts off, and its content renders without them.

Speed: no claim. Hullara averages 80 performance and 100 accessibility — the accessibility figure is the worst route in the run, not the average — and the method is published. We have not measured Dawn under the same conditions, and your own images and apps move those numbers more than the theme does. A speed comparison here would be a number with no method behind it, which is the one thing this site will not print.

When to move

Move to Hullara when you can finish this sentence: "I need my product page to do ___, and the only way I can find is an app." If the blank is a quick view, a bundle, a quantity discount, a comparison table or a shoppable photograph, it is already in one of the two editions, and you can check exactly which one on the pricing page — that table is generated from the theme's own build, so it cannot promise you a section the zip does not contain.

And if the blank is "update without losing my work": Dawn's update does not carry code you changed. Ours is merged for you, keeps your settings, templates and code edits, and waits as an unpublished theme until you publish it.

Preguntas que se hacen de verdad

When does a store outgrow Dawn?

When you are about to install an app to do something on your product page — a bundle, a quantity discount, a quick view, a shoppable photograph. Dawn is a good free theme to open a store on; Hullara has those sections built in, so they come with no monthly fee and no third-party script, and your store keeps one theme to update instead of a stack of apps to keep in step.

Will I lose my customisations when Hullara updates?

No. We do the update for you, and your templates, your theme settings and your layout are never written by it — they are copied across wholesale. Liquid files you or a developer edited are kept as yours, and named in the report so you know which ones did not take the new version. Translations are merged, so your wording survives underneath the new strings. The result arrives as a separate unpublished theme, and the store you are running is not touched until you publish it.

Is Hullara built on Dawn?

No. It is a separate codebase with its own build. That matters beyond preference: Shopify's Theme Store rules exclude themes derived from Dawn or Horizon, so a theme built on Dawn has closed a door that this one has not.

Is Hullara faster than Dawn?

We do not quote a speed multiple: a real store's own images, fonts and apps move a Lighthouse score far more than the theme does. What we have measured is what each theme asks a browser to fetch on every page — Dawn 16.0.0 requests 11 files totalling 33.2 KB gzipped; Hullara requests 2 totalling 27.3 KB. The method is on the evidence page.

Can I try Hullara before buying?

Yes, in the order that matters: upload the zip as an unpublished theme, preview it against your own products on your own phone, and publish only once you have decided — your live storefront does not change until you do. If it is not right after that, the refund is thirty days, no questions asked.
